An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
